Events and casino
nights in Oamaru

Our calendar of events and casino nights in Oamaru: weekly social poker, a monthly long-table dinner, tournament Saturdays, and the nights where someone books the whole room for their own crowd.

How poker nights work
  • Poker Thu–Sat
  • Kitchen from 5pm
  • 8 seats a table
  • Evenings 18+

The calendar

Four nights we keep coming back to

Two weekly poker nights, one dinner that books out on reputation, and the option to take the room for yourselves. Same rule under all of it: food first, then whatever the evening turns into.

  • Weekly & monthly
  • Seats go early
Thursday social poker night: a relaxed table mid-hand with wine glasses and stacked chips
Thuweekly

Thursday Social Poker

Thursday's the loose version. Eat à la carte in the dining room, wander through to the back, and settle into a hosted poker game where asking what beats what is completely fine. Half the table is usually learning, and the dealer takes new players through the basics before the first hand goes out.

Producer Long Table dinner: one shared table under candles with plates coming out of the wood oven
Frimonthly

Producer Long Table

One Friday a month we hand the menu to a single winemaker, grower or fisherman, then build five courses around whatever they brought. One table, whoever booked beside you becomes company for the evening. The poker tables get the night off. This one belongs to the kitchen.

Saturday tournament social: a full card room with players focused on a hand
Satweekly

Saturday Tournament Social

Saturday's the serious version of the Thursday game. A real blind structure, dinner landing mid-structure, and a prizegiving at close taken far more seriously than it should be. The liveliest poker night of the week, and the one that fills first. If you're thinking about a Saturday, think about it by Wednesday.

Private hire night: a long table of friends taking over the card room at Happy Daydreams

Private Hire Nights

Birthdays, work dos, club nights, the annual family grudge match. Take over the card room and we run it like a normal poker night, except everyone at the table already knows each other's tells. The kitchen keeps feeding you the whole way through.

Your crowd onlyPlan yours

Dates and guest producers get posted on the board in the dining room first. Ring +64 9 352 8417 or check the contact page if you want the next one before it's announced.

Every booking includes

The parts you don't have to organise

A Thursday seat or the whole card room, the bones of the evening are the same. We carry most of them so you can just turn up hungry.

Small room, honest numbers. Three poker tables of eight is the whole capacity. When it's full, it's full.

A host and a dealer

The host keeps the list and seats you. The dealer runs the felt, hand after hand, so nobody has to pretend they know the rules of the game.

Dinner first

Every event starts in the dining room. Wood-fired plates, bread baked at four, a wine list led by New Zealand — cards start once plates are cleared.

The gear

Real chips with some weight, proper cards, three felt tables of eight. Everything's in the room already; you bring the people.

Bar service to the felt

Drinks find your seat between hands, and after nine the kitchen moves to food that survives a card break. Terrine, oysters, the cheese toastie.

A patient intro

New to the game? The dealer gives you ten minutes before the first hand: blinds, betting, folding and meaning it. Nobody's marking you on it.

A proper close

Chips get counted, someone wins something small from the bar, and the room winds down before it winds you up. Home by midnight, mostly.

How a night runs

Dinner, cards, supper, home

Whether it's a Thursday social or a private booking, the evening follows the same arc. Long-table Fridays swap the cards for a fifth course, but the shape holds.

5.00pm

Doors and dinner

The kitchen opens and the room fills. Most people eat before anything else, because a well-fed table is a friendlier table.

6.45pm

The list gets called

The host reads out the seats and sorts the chips. Held places are released at quarter to, so be in the room, not on the road.

7.00pm

First hand, or first course

Poker nights go to the felt from seven. Long-table Fridays pour the welcome glass and start the menu instead.

9.00pm

Late plates land

The kitchen moves to food that survives a card break. Eat between hands or between courses, whichever night you're on.

11.00pm

Settle up, lights low

Chips counted, glasses topped for the last toast, winner quietly smug. The bar keeps going a little longer for the ones who aren't done talking.

The card room at Happy Daydreams mid-event: felt tables, pendant lamps and drinks on the rail
Thu–Sat
every week
  • Dining room from 5pm, cards from 7pm
  • Bar till late, last plates about 10.30pm
  • Held seats released at 6.45pm
  • Every hosted evening is strictly 18+

Groups and private hire

Bring eight, or take all twenty-four

Two ways to make an event of it. A table of your own inside a regular poker night, or the whole card room with your name on the door list.

A table of your own

Got eight? That's a full table, which means your crew plays together inside a normal hosted night. Same dinner, same dealers, same room. Work teams, birthday groups and reunion crowds book these the most. Tell us it's a group when you book and we'll keep you on one felt.

The whole room

Private hire means all three tables, your own dealer roster and a menu we build with you. Stag nights, company evenings, club fundraisers, the Christmas do that got out of hand. The dining room stays part of it, so the night still starts with a proper meal at the Esplanade.

  • Groups of 8+
  • Up to 24 players privately
  • Menu planned with the kitchen

Guest notes

What people say after an event night

We took the card room for my dad's 60th. The dealer ran a patient learner game for the uncles and a serious one for the rest of us, the kitchen sent out courses between hands, and at some point my mum won the table. Nobody wanted to leave at close.

Long Table night was the best dinner I've had in Waitaki, and I've lived here twenty years.

Our whole crew booked a Saturday. Eight of us, one table, and a prizegiving we've argued about every week since.

Questions

Asked before people book

The things we get rung about most. Anything else lands with a human on the contact page.

Getting here

We're at 1 Esplanade, South Hill, a short walk from the Victorian precinct. Parking along the waterfront.

We're a restaurant with a social card room. The casino-night feel is real — tables, chips, a dealer, a prizegiving — while the games stay social and hosted. Nothing on a screen, nothing online.

Thursday. The social night is built for beginners: a dealer gives you ten minutes before the first hand and the regulars are patient because they were you once. Saturdays are kinder once you know your blinds.

Yes, that's the Private Hire Nights slot. Up to 24 players across the three tables, your own dealers, and a menu we plan with you. Eight or fewer and a group table inside a regular night probably fits better; the form above covers both.

Ask to be on the list when you book anything, or ring us. It's one shared table a month and regulars get first call, so the wait is shorter if you're already on our radar. The next producer gets announced on the dining-room board first.

No. The dining room runs its own evening Wednesday to Sunday, and plenty of people sit out the games entirely. On long-table nights there are no cards at all: dinner from start to close.

The evening room is, yes. Bring photo ID if you could plausibly be asked for it. Lunch-style private bookings are a different matter, so talk to us and we'll work something out.

The fine print

A good night, kept that way

Casino nights here mean a hosted evening at a restaurant: food, drinks and social games between people at the same table. We keep the rules tight so nobody has to think about them at the table.

  • Strictly 18+
  • In-venue only
  • Host has final word

In person, always. All poker at Happy Daydreams is played face to face inside the venue. We're not an online casino, we don't take bets over the internet and there's no app version of us.

Strictly 18+ in the evenings. Photo ID may be requested at the door, and the host can call a night early if it stops being friendly. If cards ever stop feeling like fun, the Gambling Helpline NZ is on 0800 654 655, free and confidential, worth saving.
